Collect , a creative reuse thrift store

Thanks to amazing donors in our community, we stock 85% of our store with new and used art supplies, crafts, trinkets, vintage notions and fabrics, antiques, and of course, oddities. The rest is filled with local weird, macabre, or subversive artists that have their art for sale in our shop. All profits go towards a big goal of ours…

Gather , a free art studio for the community

Portage County and surrounding areas are teetering at 54% of the population being below the ALICE Threshold (represents the minimum income level necessary for households to afford basic necessities—housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and technology—without public or private assistance

a create reuse thrift store

Collect is the store side of our nonprofit. All profits go towards Gather, the free community art studio. We have an amazing community in our area who helps stock our store with donations regularly. If you’re looking to get rid of the following we accept donations for the thrift store, free community art studio, and to save for free community workshops:

Things we don’t take:

Wisconsin's Weird Artists

1/3 of our space in Collect is dedicated to helping fringe artists in Wisconsin sell their works. Artists who take recycled material and make funky finds. Macabre art. Dirty works. 20% commission is added onto those who are more local while 30% commission is added onto those who require traveling to them for pick up out of Portage County and surrounding areas within 40 minutes. Commission profits go directly back in to our nonprofit mission. Artists stay for 3 months at a time and if you’re interested in applying to sell your works during the next slot – email Jacquelyn at collectgatherplover@gmail.com.

#1 Free Access to art learning for adults

We are not a common arts nonprofit in rural Wisconsin. The nonprofit arts sector often favors wealthy institutions over poverty initiatives like ours because of how it is financed. Since these organizations rely heavily on wealthy donors, corporate sponsors, and tax-advantaged asset donations, funding tends to flow toward high-end galleries, symphonies, and elite museums that reinforce prestige. We fight to fill the gaps left behind for the creatives struggling to make ends meet. A big part of that is making art learning financially accessible to a population falling more and more under the ALICE Threshold. Through our free community art workshops each month and Free Community Art Studio – we offer the public a “third space” stocked with art supplies donated by our great community. Volunteer-run (and hopefully intern-run one day), we hold Open Studio Days where locals can come and have access to painting supplies, screen printing, embroidery, sewing, and more to try out at their own pace without the financial barrier of access to try something out or just get of the house and meet like-minded creative adults!

#2 Universal Basic Income for Artists

Even beyond fair pay compensation for our artisan instructors AND contract advocation services for our local muralists, we aim to build a program of Guaranteed Income for Artists. Artists are often pillars of their community. They work hard, like most people, and contribute billions to the economy. They also contribute to the well-being of our communities: embellishing our spaces, enriching the lives of children, preserving old cultures, and helping new ones emerge. However there is no equitable future for artists here. When our #1 goal is established we will begin the next phase to bring UBI (Universal Basic Income). A no strings attached monthly stipend for 1 year to a new artist each year; effectively giving artists peace of mind to create artworks and make-ends-meet at the same time.
